Welcome to SportyDogGuide’s Extra Wide Dog Gate With Door review!
Most times, I love having my dogs with me anywhere I am in the house. But there are times when I don’t want them following me, such as down a flight of steep basement stairs when I’m juggling a hamper of laundry. In households with young children, you may want to keep your kids and dogs apart at times for safety.
It’s time like those when a dog gate is essential.
All dog gates are not created equal. Many are designed for standard door openings and the like but if you have a large space to cover, such as the entry to a kitchen or living room you’ll need a dog gate with a much wider opening.
How wide can you go? Turns out, you can cover nearly any space with the proper gate – and perhaps an extension or two.
These extra wide dog gates all have walk-through doors, they offer excellent build quality and the extra reach needed to close off extra wide spaces.
From 5 feet to 16 feet, here are the best extra wide dog gates to close big gaps.
The Supergate Deluxe Décor Gate, from North States, is a metal gate that stands 30 inches high and will fit openings from 38.3 inches to 72 inches wide. It’s an excellent choice for several reasons. The arched gate door is 25.5 inches wide, which provides plenty of room to walk through even if your hands are full. It also sports a stay-open feature and has a double-locking safety latch on both ends. And the gate panels have pivot points, so you can configure the gate to meet your needs, either mounted straight across or angled.
This attractive unit is available in brown or linen, and it comes pre-assembled. To secure the gate, you’ll need to first install four wall mounting brackets (two upper and two lower) with the provided hardware. The gate then slips over the mounts and locks into place with a button mechanism on the top brackets. By depressing the buttons on the top brackets, you can lift and remove the gate. Need extra width? North States offers a separate 6-bar extension that adds another 15 inches.

The panels stand 30 inches high. Its swing-through door has a double-locking mechanism for safety and each panel features a rubber foot to protect floors.
If this pre-assembled gate has a drawback, it would be its narrow door that’s just shy of 14 inches wide. The positives are its solid construction, durability and ease of installation. For extra width, North States offers 2-panel extensions for 4 feet of additional coverage.
See Current PriceWhen you have a seriously big space to protect with a gate, the Regalo Super Wide might be the answer. This 4-in-1 safety gate features a series of 8 steel panels, each standing 28 inches high and measuring 2-feet wide. You can join them together for a whopping 16-feet of linear coverage!
It’s also highly configurable. You can use it freestanding to cordon off a section of a room, a piece of furniture – even a Christmas tree. You can also configure the gate into a play area perfect for smaller dogs or kids – or both.
The gate comes with hardware to mount to a wall, and like the Supergate Deluxe, you can remove the Regalo from the mounts if you want to take down the gate to clean the area around it. You will need a few basic tools (screwdriver, drill, tape measure and pencil) to assemble and attach to a wall, but it doesn’t require any special “handyman” skills.
See Current PriceThe Richell Deluxe Large Pet Gate is a great option if you prefer the look of wood to metal, have hardwood floors, or just want a gate you can move in an instant . This rubberwood gate stands 36.2 inches high and is designed to fit openings from 61.8 inches to 90.2 inches wide.
The gate door provides a 19.5-inch opening and locks automatically at the top and bottom. When open, it remains at a 90-degree angle for easy passage. Side panels keep the gate from tipping over, and rubber feet help keep your floors protected. Instead of bars, the gate has a series of wire slats that run vertically and horizontally to form a barrier.
Because it is freestanding, you can move it, turn it around or put away when not in use. The downside of any wooden pet gate is that it can be damaged if your dog starts chewing it. Richell recommends this gate for medium to large dogs, weighing 17.6 to 88 pounds.
